Model 7340 · Phase Noise Analyzers

Characterize radar and microwave sources to 40 GHz.

A two-channel cross-correlation phase noise analyzer covering 1 MHz to 40 GHz, with offsets from 0.01 Hz to 100 MHz. Options add pulsed and burst phase noise, additive phase noise for amplifiers and mixers, and transient, AM noise and VCO analysis in the same 3U half-rack instrument.

Specified down to the noise floor.

Frequency range
1 MHz to 40 GHz
Internal references; 5 MHz to 18 GHz with external references; K (2.92 mm) female RF input
Offset range
0.01 Hz to 100 MHz
Carriers above 150 MHz; accuracy ±2 dB from 1 kHz to 100 MHz offset (typical)
Sensitivity at 10 GHz
−135 dBc/Hz
10 kHz offset, internal references, one correlation; each 10x more correlations lowers the floor about 5 dB

−190 dBc/Hz
Typical at high offsets after more than 1,000 correlations, for example at 100 MHz and 1 GHz carriers
Pulsed phase noise
30 MHz to 40 GHz
Option PULSE (pulse width from 1 µs) or NPS (from 50 ns, 0.1% duty cycle); PRF 300 Hz to 2 MHz
Additive phase noise
10 MHz to 18 GHz
Option APN, CW or pulsed with option PULSE; amplifiers, transmitters, dividers and mixers
Input power
−15 to +20 dBm
Below 18 GHz; to +23 dBm from 18 to 30 GHz; −5 to +23 dBm above 30 GHz; damage level +26 dBm
Control interfaces
LAN, USB
VXI-11 and USBTMC; GPIB optional; SCPI 1999 command set and API library

Specifications reproduced from the 7000 Series datasheet (v1.25) as published at berkeleynucleonics.com. Typical values are expected mean values, not warranted performance. Sensitivity figures assume carrier power of +5 dBm or more. LN, PULSE, NPS, BURST, APN, LO, AM, TRAN, TSTAB, VCO, SPEC, GPIB and RM are options.

Where the 7340 goes to work.

Radar and pulsed sources
absolute and additive phase noise on pulsed carriers from 30 MHz to 40 GHz with options PULSE and NPS, plus single bursts as short as 10 µs with option BURST.

Aerospace and defense subsystems
additive phase noise of amplifiers, transmitters and mixers (option APN), and frequency, phase and amplitude versus time at 16 ns resolution (option TRAN).

VCO and oscillator characterization
two low-noise DC supplies (15 V, 550 mA per channel) and three tuning voltages sweep a VCO while logging frequency, KVCO, pushing, power, current and phase noise (option VCO).

High-speed production test
SCPI command set and API library over LAN, USB or optional GPIB, with under 4 ms per correlation for offsets from 10 kHz to 100 MHz.

Phase noise to 40 GHz: CW, pulsed or additive.
