Thank you for your interest in our ground-breaking DMM, the Model 1201. This unique product meets or exceeds every specification you have grown used to in the Agilent 34401. However, we have some exciting new details to discuss.
First – we have full USBTMC support. USBTMC is an acronym for USB Test & Measurement Class. Any USB device that conforms to USBTMC (without system wide limitations) will work well under VISA assistance, and communicate with a computer at much higher speeds than GPIB. In other words, the control procedures via VISA to a USBTMC device and via VISA to a GPIB device are the same.
The advantage of using USBTMC with the BNC Model 1201 is threefold. First, you eliminate the costly components associated with the GPIB option. Secondly, you will not need to reprogram your setup which originally worked with a GPIB interface. Third, you can now connect up to 127 units at a time, at distances up to 90 feet. Give us a call, we’d love to talk with you about a new standard for Test and Measurement products that will change the way your bench works… USBTMC.
USBTMC Application Note:
Before using USBTMC, please click into NI website to download NI driver. After setting up your Model 1201 Digital Multimeter, the 1201 application software, BNC-TOOL & BNC-LINK (enclosed in the CD), you will quickly be communicating with the unit. The platform is flexible, so if you have Labview or your own communication software, we are compatible with that too !
The 6 1/2 digit Model 1201 DMM was designed with many of the operational blocks of a 7 1/2 digit DMM, leveraging some of the latest techniques in signal measurement. We provide a stable, fast and accurate measurement. The following figure illustrates the stability performance comparison between the typical 6 1/2 digit DMM and the Model 1201.

Our thermal measurement functions support two types of measurements: Thermocouples and RTDs. For thermocouples, we support up to seven types of sensors: J, K, T, E, N, S and R, using a NIST Monograph 175 reference table. For the RTDs temperature conversions, we adopt three types of standard: ITS-90, IEC751 and Callendar-Van Dusen standard in our thermal measurement functions. This comprehensive approach will give you confidence in your measurements and ensure that each Model 1201 you use will perform identically.

Displays make a difference in products, and we have selected an excellent viewing option that you will enjoy for years. Our new 5x7 dot matrix, VFD offers dual displays and a three-color annunciator. This allows easy identification of characters and symbols, both by resolution and by color..

This model has excellent performance features when you are considering a need for noise immunity. Core technology in the Model 1201 includes a powerful multi-slope analog to digital converter (A/D converter) This special A/D converter (patent pending) sets new standards in eliminating noise when making measurements, allowing new high-speed sampling rate To be met accurately. Furthermore, in addition to filtering out the noise, our DMM maintains it’s industry leading measurement linearity. Part of the design includes an environmental screen and four sets of ground connections running to the meter's front panel. Copper conductors inside the meter also contribute to reducing thermal EMF.
The Model 1201 is equipped with a standard USB interface. This easy-to-use and hot plug-in USB interface has a high data-transfer rate (over 2000 readings per second) making GPIB or other communication protocols clunky and time consuming. It allows your DMM to reach a higher speed, both internal sampling rate and I/O data rate. Once you switch to this platform, you will no longer accept the GPIB limitations. For less sensitive applications however, or those of you still using Windows 95, we will continue to offer GPIB indefinitely.

The Remote Control Software, BNC-TOOL & BNC-LINK, are included with each unit and quite easy to set up. BNC-TOOL is a stand-alone software package which can imitate a virtual Model 1201 operation on a PC, and allow users to transmit data in Excel format to the unit or back from the unit. In addition, BNC-LINK under the Microsoft Word & Excel applications provide user functions like obtaining values and diagrams.
