RD-100 Series Radiation Detection Backpack

RD-100 Series Radiation Detection Backpack

Berkeley Nucleonics is introducing the RD-100 Series Radiation Detection Backpacks for a wide range of radiological monitoring activities. The RD-100, which runs for 24 hours on a single charge, is used in a roaming fashion for clandestine monitoring of radiation levels. When logged in a command center, these units are displayed as moving icons on a map screen in the Command-and-Control software. When an RD-100 Radiation Detection Backpack detects a radiation events of interest (as defined by the user’s ConOps), the wearer is notified via a Smart Phone or Alarm and additional actions are taken as appropriate. For example, the wearer may use the backpack to zero in on the likely cause of the alarm, take one or more pictures of the area with a Smartphone, and send those pictures back to the Command Center to supplement the data transmitted automatically by the backpack. Because the RD-100 Radiation Detection Backpack continuously transmits it’s GPS location and corresponding radiation level and energy spectrum to a reachback location, the remote team can easily map radiation levels.

Powerful Command and Control Software The RD-100 Radiation Detection Backpack comes with powerful Command-and-Control software that handles communication between Radiation Sentries and other properly equipped assets in the field and the local Command Center where information is aggregated and key decisions are made. The Command-and-Control software is web-based allowing authorized users, outside agencies, and radiation experts to access the information over a secure Internet connection using a web browser. Information can also be obtained using a Smart-phone using either the built-in browser or a special-purpose application.

Sample User Interface Screens A commonly used screens is shown here: Map Display: Icons on the map display screen show the location and status of the RD-100 . Green indicates that the RD-100 is operating properly and not in alarm state. Red indicates that the RD-100 is in alarm state. Orange indicates that the RD-100 has alarmed but is no longer in an alarm state and that the alarm has yet not been acknowledged at the Command Center. Yellow indicates trouble and that the RD-100 is not operating properly. The Energy Spectrum is available by drilling down on the RD-100 icons. An expert can use the spectrum to assess the reliability of the isotope identification performed automatically by the software.
